on a hilltop overlooking the surrey downs lays a plot i run past often. the position of the current house; which is a big 1930s brick and render building, needs modernisation and a big rethink. i came up with the idea of making the new house level with the hilltop where you step down into the four bedroom house taking inspiration from alvar aalto and the scandinavian architecture of the 1960s. wood and red brick being the dominant building materials together with vertical and horizontal beams holding the structure in place.
